Win10 troubleshooting not working – incomplete shutdown

Win10 troubleshooting is not working because its Shut Down option does not shut the computer down fully

Access the Win10 troubleshooting option Troubleshoot from the “Advanced Options” menu - press the Shift key and click the “Restart” option in the Start menu

Automatic Win10 troubleshooting does not take place on its own to fix problems unless Windows 10 is shut down fully.

Unfortunately, Win10 has a feature that it enables by default during its setup – Fast Startup – that keeps its kernel – the functional core of the operating system – in a state of hibernation. This enables the system to start up much more quickly than if the kernel were shut down fully.

The feature also exists in Windows 8.1. Names for Fast Startup in Win8 are: Fast Boot and Hybrid Boot or Hybrid Shutdown.

Win10 troubleshooting:

How to make Win10 shut down fully

  1. – Clicking the Restart button when shutting down makes Win10 perform a full reboot during which its own healing abilities function.
  2. – Win10 also performs a full shut down if you press the Shift key and click the “Shut Down” option. This works from the Start menu, the sign-in screen and even from the screen that appears after pressing the  Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination.
  3. – Disable Fast Startup so that it no longer interferes with Win 10 troubleshooting during and after a restart – automatic and manual. Examples of other reasons for disabling Fast Startup are 1. – older hardware can be incompatible with the feature 2. – in a dual-boot Linux system, the Win10 file system can’t be accessed unless Win10 is shut down fully, which is not the case with Fast Startup working.

Win10 troubleshooting – How to disable Fast Startup

Start Menu => Control Panel => System and Security => Power Options. Click on the “Change settings that are currently unavailable” link.  Disable the “Turn On Fast Startup (Recommended)” option under “Shutdown Settings”. Don’t forget to finish by clicking the “Save Changes” button.
